We know, different name but it is a small tribute to the school where we first met whose mascot was the toucan! It was there as “toucans” we learned the value of collaboration and teamwork between SLPs and teachers.Katie and Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12792283998222573109noreply@blogger.comBlogger156125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8523393913841060345.post-62666128723777446292019-01-21T07:47:00.000-08:002019-01-21T07:47:04.500-08:00Holy cow. It's been a L...O...N...G time since I last blogged. Like five years long. A lot has happened in the past five years. Steve and I went from working in the same district to new roles in new (separate) districts.<br />
<br />
He is currently the Literacy Coordinator and making some major headway for his school district. Steve was recently given a huge shout-out from the <a href="https://dyslexiaida.org/marysville-schools-leading-the-way-evolving-best-practices-for-learners-with-dyslexia/" target="_blank">International Dyslexia Association Central Ohio</a> and spoke to the <a href="https://dyslexiaida.org/marysville-schools-leading-the-way-evolving-best-practices-for-learners-with-dyslexia/" target="_blank">Ohio School Board</a> (hour 1/minute 33). Between taking care of his three boys and texting me to brag about his days off...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIL3oOxaVL89F8byfqcHJgTQCNqhvAnm43XfjuUTk6uWWtg8GizfIHcULC25uQY5JnvK_OUxgThJo_6jY7FKVv2PzQOD7lpNUqIqVl5s8Fh5WjTqwn3HL8URHG6EZnuDpv3PD0xR_jrv47/s1600/IMG_3158.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIL3oOxaVL89F8byfqcHJgTQCNqhvAnm43XfjuUTk6uWWtg8GizfIHcULC25uQY5JnvK_OUxgThJo_6jY7FKVv2PzQOD7lpNUqIqVl5s8Fh5WjTqwn3HL8URHG6EZnuDpv3PD0xR_jrv47/s320/IMG_3158.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
He's pretty busy.<br />
<br />
Me? Well, I have taken a little hiatus from website work, blogging, and social media for the past few years. Landing a new role in a new district was a challenge. Although it is in close proximity to my previous district, they couldn't be more different! After settling into my job, I purchased a house...and quickly jumped into my new roles as a plumber, landscaper, roofer, painter, full-time leaf raker, and wanna-be designer. During my free time, I have also tried to focus on myself...eating better and working out everyday. Blah, blah, blah.<br />
<br />
Just recently I realized how much I miss you all and sharing classroom ideas & strategies. So, here I am. Back at it again. Today my goal is to get all of my social media icons back up and working. In the meantime, here are other ways to stalk me in my classroom:<br />

It's hard to believe that schools starts here in the next couple weeks. We've been working this summer on making some updates to our <b><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Fluency-Builders-Basic-Code-145479" target="_blank">TpT Store</a> </b>and for this week only…you can download our <b><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Fluency-Builders-Basic-Code-145479" target="_blank">Basic Code Fluency Builders</a> </b>for FREE! If you have purchased these in the past, you'll notice the fonts have been jazzed up a bit (sorry, no more Comic Sans!)<br />

It never seems to fail that I forget my laptop when I come up with reading ideas for my kids. Translation: My school computer has a horrific font selection to choose from! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I should be embarrassed to post this, but since I didn't use Times New Roman, I'll let it slide...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My kindergarten reading groups are coming right along...I have been extremely proud of the progress they've made since the beginning of the school year! Monster proud. Lately, they have been sounding out every single sound in a word even if they can automatically read the word. I've tried everything I can to get them to just read the word if they know it...including standing on the table as "Captain Read the Word".</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, we decided to become word detective readers! I placed 20 basic code words (with numbers) around my classroom (pink words were ones I knew they'd be able to read easily and purple words were ones that might present more of a challenge).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdYR3wjXVdLxngk-kUXzCWTaXSaDlSQ78ZZK6MOCvZTSHclN4l4TM9zO4piPJvaH6aCP8MP-fwsEGwJUjWJcnojttGWtiV5PlNxABtRuoiWpaCkAZ3o3CBBgv_ZVr6HsOROdUJiB7x8eHB/s1600/IMG_1772.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdYR3wjXVdLxngk-kUXzCWTaXSaDlSQ78ZZK6MOCvZTSHclN4l4TM9zO4piPJvaH6aCP8MP-fwsEGwJUjWJcnojttGWtiV5PlNxABtRuoiWpaCkAZ3o3CBBgv_ZVr6HsOROdUJiB7x8eHB/s1600/IMG_1772.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpCP5Z1d84-LJ1ddCkddX8McHITrCuwMq43XNUNGCWNGq9N29bRyUaCBFYB7KTUOUZJzgmCATN_zMgMhyphenhyphen5gVcuHQAtOKRMYE_ZgCuRl6h0RtdbHc4ECdMldbPnbkC6Kdi_JdCt5um1vmXv/s1600/IMG_1775.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpCP5Z1d84-LJ1ddCkddX8McHITrCuwMq43XNUNGCWNGq9N29bRyUaCBFYB7KTUOUZJzgmCATN_zMgMhyphenhyphen5gVcuHQAtOKRMYE_ZgCuRl6h0RtdbHc4ECdMldbPnbkC6Kdi_JdCt5um1vmXv/s1600/IMG_1775.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
And each student was given a "Detective Reading Tracker" sheet (below) in which they drew pictures to indicate the word that was read. (Clearly, #4 is a crab!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSn7JlL2i4OX6KvLXkqvQYd33T_GA7kmCXv5kCErPw1BJbWQdpsQHi5UqA8RfazJqtBHg7w8mgrK9LJ5OvN0_ttrksV5nWGuNji9gx0YtpfZnyez2jhoLVP_5sdkoCyTnLJwvuG1_6NsSA/s1600/IMG_1780.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSn7JlL2i4OX6KvLXkqvQYd33T_GA7kmCXv5kCErPw1BJbWQdpsQHi5UqA8RfazJqtBHg7w8mgrK9LJ5OvN0_ttrksV5nWGuNji9gx0YtpfZnyez2jhoLVP_5sdkoCyTnLJwvuG1_6NsSA/s1600/IMG_1780.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I told the kids if they sounded the words out, other detectives in the room would hear them! In order to complete their "reading mission" they had to read every word on their own! And they did.</div>
<br />

Where have we been???? That's a good question...by now you've probably moved on and forgotten about us over here at TwoCanDoIt. (And well, we can't blame you!) </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Teaching lowercase "b" and "d" this year has been a challenge to say the least...Once I think they got it, they are back to using the guessing strategy! Back in the day I taught these two letters with my handy old "bed" chart, but later realized this technique was not appropriate for many struggling readers. I don't have them use the "give yourself two thumbs up trick" because that sometimes can get tricky if they are writing and have a pencil in one hand!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil9P430grGBUgYuyv3AyUh_G6koh_9RMvSxfsWCq5ZtpNa_9VaE1C8Y7xOZ1a-siHa99J4H2WtqUHDmZ0X7nNTUrRyBj9BVd0u4Vk9JfPJj01O8z6AJ4OHmVKqofXUgQPOwUGsMpUvAhC0/s1600/bed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil9P430grGBUgYuyv3AyUh_G6koh_9RMvSxfsWCq5ZtpNa_9VaE1C8Y7xOZ1a-siHa99J4H2WtqUHDmZ0X7nNTUrRyBj9BVd0u4Vk9JfPJj01O8z6AJ4OHmVKqofXUgQPOwUGsMpUvAhC0/s1600/bed.jpg" height="200" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Because
kids tend <b>not</b> to confuse the uppercase versions of the letters "B" and "D," using them to learn the lowercase "b" and "d" can be helpful. Here's how! When a child is
unsure about whether the letter they are looking at is a "b" or a "d" have them write an uppercase "B". If you erase the top bubble off, you are left with a lowercase "b".</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I keep a <b><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3oSQOjnoBNWX2liTVFYTXRIM0k/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">poster</a></b> in my room as a visual if they need a reminder...as shown below.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYpMIMjB_Lp8f-hFzT16WY-6w_Hp76fbXl-69wqMQOWV7rtF7ONbxfTByt6MB1RPSlJqazFgodN2pxZ55XZM5LqpEirFXboDZ_IXBxLc6bqDO5Y6vz57ltFUyqS3b_nGtUSghjlFAMrs_m/s1600/IMG_1744.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYpMIMjB_Lp8f-hFzT16WY-6w_Hp76fbXl-69wqMQOWV7rtF7ONbxfTByt6MB1RPSlJqazFgodN2pxZ55XZM5LqpEirFXboDZ_IXBxLc6bqDO5Y6vz57ltFUyqS3b_nGtUSghjlFAMrs_m/s1600/IMG_1744.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When kids are reading and get stuck trying to determine which is which, I give them a little scrap of lamination that I have left over to place on top of the word. If they can draw a bubble on top of the letter, and it makes an uppercase "B"...Then they know they are dealing with a lowercase "b".</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPfbcDh6kdSgypsZtAilVhdnBjPcoqjBQEwFLVmNwToSEZl3C9cS6LW8nzPwlE9zcqIBakJaUykgMHJBjhBQuUsVrJAulrrnX9wmRIFLuWjBClb0JSXp7GHzwofrG7yLE7znBjfNrUcvLu/s1600/IMG_1743.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPfbcDh6kdSgypsZtAilVhdnBjPcoqjBQEwFLVmNwToSEZl3C9cS6LW8nzPwlE9zcqIBakJaUykgMHJBjhBQuUsVrJAulrrnX9wmRIFLuWjBClb0JSXp7GHzwofrG7yLE7znBjfNrUcvLu/s1600/IMG_1743.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Over spring break I stumbled upon a new trick that I found on, none other than Pinterest! <a href="http://commoncoreconnectionusa.blogspot.com/2013/01/you-can-bulldoze-b-clearing-up-bd.html" style="font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">Common Core Connection</a> has taken Matchbox bulldozers to show kids how you can only bulldoze the letter "b". If you try to bulldoze the letter "d" it won't stay in a straight line. So naturally, I went to the dollar store and snagged a few bulldozers to keep in my classroom! I made a quick poster (nothing fancy) that you can <b><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3oSQOjnoBNWV2h5V0hHaTM5Yms/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">download here!</a></b><a href="https://www.blogger.com/"></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Keeping my fingers crossed that this does the trick! What ways do you have to teach these letter reversals?</div>

It's been a while since we've added a new font in the mix…but here you are blogger friends!</div>

I am pretty excited to report that my first grade reading groups are making tremendous progress this year. We've spent the past month learning how to say the sounds in words and being able to put those sounds back together! A few days ago they started to realize that some words are trying to "trick" us! We stumbled across the word "away" and it didn't sound right! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I created two posters (below) in which we've been adding, "Words We Can Sound Out" and "Words We Know by Sight". (Please excuse the font selection on these posters, as I was in a hurry and don't have much to select from on my computer at school!) I spent some time talking to them about how those "tricky" words are going to be the focus of the rest of first grade and that I'd teach them tricks to figure out those words. Every time we come across a new word, they get pretty excited to write it on a Post-It...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiZwQNCRB5aepntRVxDsTuhyphenhyphenAWtSeL7WPwE4fS_PHMDbkTc0sE81NfR7RpnSwqafCnqBtzyE6VYx2rD0iX3VitjfNVlIt0ShAIB36o9lg5VH3zx7yayp4Umyt_R34DAxgGRihpzmDz70Vm/s1600/Posters.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiZwQNCRB5aepntRVxDsTuhyphenhyphenAWtSeL7WPwE4fS_PHMDbkTc0sE81NfR7RpnSwqafCnqBtzyE6VYx2rD0iX3VitjfNVlIt0ShAIB36o9lg5VH3zx7yayp4Umyt_R34DAxgGRihpzmDz70Vm/s1600/Posters.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Today I wanted to see how they did when we talked about these tricky words a little bit further. I read aloud to them, "The Two Greedy Bears" by Mirra Ginsburg...Which happens to be one of my favorites! I told them there was a "fancy" word in the story that we were going to figure out the meaning. (The word was 'sly').<br />
<br />
If you haven't read this story before, two bears argue over how to divide their food into equal parts. A fox comes along and purposely divides the food so that one piece is bigger than the other. In order to make the pieces equal, she takes an unequal bite...until two small tiny pieces are left.<br />
<br />
The kids realize that the fox was trying to trick the two bears...she was being <b>sly!</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkS0rQRcol4b62eEugUkjgPjRX011pPn1ccDgSniLzPHMOP_tZkUmvPZPXRa1IdAeu5P4l4c4oglceAujqCbAWEoZN-ojjPIXaZ-s74GeZM0mj9iHQdtsvk_ddXnHdUOc_Nt9PbjQrsDrp/s1600/2GreedyBears.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkS0rQRcol4b62eEugUkjgPjRX011pPn1ccDgSniLzPHMOP_tZkUmvPZPXRa1IdAeu5P4l4c4oglceAujqCbAWEoZN-ojjPIXaZ-s74GeZM0mj9iHQdtsvk_ddXnHdUOc_Nt9PbjQrsDrp/s1600/2GreedyBears.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I told my kiddos that many times words we come across are sly. We can't always say each sound in a word...someone decided to make reading tricky!<br />
<br />
We took a Post-It off of one of our charts and tried to determine if each letter was saying their sound. If they did say their correct sounds (like in <i>frog</i> /f/ /r/ /o/ /g/) then it is NOT a sly word. If they didn't say their correct sounds like in <i>my</i>, then the word is sly and we determined the letter or letters that were making it tricky. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhqX9O2tCr-zPx_WrcqlD5DQEPPESfzyvRDRh18Jv2AFgzdZWS7fHkOjmCr4gqL4dhTAzjywkc4q_s7bM3xWHUANpYrcRwRqAQqiMfBaYOFAt060H5UTNUuTPlf8mgk74jU0JOMJHK5Dj9/s1600/FlipChart.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhqX9O2tCr-zPx_WrcqlD5DQEPPESfzyvRDRh18Jv2AFgzdZWS7fHkOjmCr4gqL4dhTAzjywkc4q_s7bM3xWHUANpYrcRwRqAQqiMfBaYOFAt060H5UTNUuTPlf8mgk74jU0JOMJHK5Dj9/s1600/FlipChart.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
Next week we will be generating a list of words that contain the sound /oe/ as in <i>home</i>. My goal for them next week is to see that there are many different ways to represent that sound. (If you'd like to see more on how I teach this, head on over to <a href="http://readingresource.net/">ReadingResource.net</a>!) I will be posting our progress over the next few months!<br />
<br />
The first quarter is almost complete and I couldn't be more proud of my first grade groups! </div>

Well, because of this…</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2gU8lDRvKCUEWpHKFyV00DWpvoCYTuzy8qH2ErScAMIxY3vNuG5J71G-ahyphenhyphen_vCd9Nf0EZwT9kLfJU1rJIfgJTr0Z5RgN13oM04iHELd8-xv7Ri9KICZryHJAXpfq8K6ZlKNHaXmov4Q4M/s1600/IMG_1379.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2gU8lDRvKCUEWpHKFyV00DWpvoCYTuzy8qH2ErScAMIxY3vNuG5J71G-ahyphenhyphen_vCd9Nf0EZwT9kLfJU1rJIfgJTr0Z5RgN13oM04iHELd8-xv7Ri9KICZryHJAXpfq8K6ZlKNHaXmov4Q4M/s1600/IMG_1379.PNG" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've decided that it was the perfect time to write a blog post! (Plus it's been a ba-zillion years!) And it doesn't hurt that I'm binge watching Season 3 of this…</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEillvHLI-A-fViPk6bG3HDT2FrHn-oFlMdHSiteDydHwUAxzJnuG6oVjDty_HetatS-JkmTX6n4RHyhViV1IG8cMpFPM3ydOL5m5dSj-DtNp6T9FA7gBsmrPqcgONl11iZXdqJHdlh9pVBl/s1600/IMG_1383.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEillvHLI-A-fViPk6bG3HDT2FrHn-oFlMdHSiteDydHwUAxzJnuG6oVjDty_HetatS-JkmTX6n4RHyhViV1IG8cMpFPM3ydOL5m5dSj-DtNp6T9FA7gBsmrPqcgONl11iZXdqJHdlh9pVBl/s1600/IMG_1383.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A lot has happened since the last post. I currently took a job teaching in a new district. It's been the best decision I've ever made, but it took me a while to get all of my school junk into a small space. Well, it's more like a closet. And no, I don't have a window…but I do have an exposed brick wall, which I've always wanted in my home. So I guess I will settle for having it in my classroom!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is what I started with:</div>

It's been a few months since I've posted…Nothing but the typical "school has been keeping me busy" excuse! And again, I'm sorry. Now that school is out, I plan on posting some of the things I've created over the past few months and hopefully you will forgive me!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
About a month ago, I went to a baby shower for one of my bestest friends (who happens to also be a teacher). In lieu of baby cards, we were asked to help jump-start Baby P's Library with a book. Well, I wasn't ok with just "a book". I decided that I needed to make a "Complete Reading Kit"…making sure that I had a book for each big idea in reading (phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wrapped each book with a ribbon and used a clip to hold the little card for each book…with a few inside jokes that will make no sense to you! </div>

A few days ago I was preparing for a presentation with all of my pocket chart word sorts spread all over the place...In the midst of sorting through baggies and baggies of words, I wondered why I never have created a "Word Wall" around the sounds that I'm teaching my kiddos? Why do I display words by their beginning letter? (It's definitely not how I teach…)<br />
<br />
And...Because I've been stuck in my apartment because of this…</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I also have been looking for just the right vocabulary tools for my 3rd Graders…after looking and looking and finding nothing, I decided to create a special dictionary of my own! I purchased one-inch binders for each student and printed all of the pages in this download. The first few pages are "tools" that can help them (Synonyms, Antonyms, Tier Words, Parts of Speech). I'm working with the lowest 3rd Graders in my building and they NEED as many visuals as they can get...</div>

A few years back I created a CVC game that I played with my firsties at the beginning of the school year...I'm pretty embarrassed about the graphics I used for it, which is why I'm hesitant to post the link on here...but I promise you, I'm in the process of revamping it! (And no, I won't use Word graphics. Bible!) Since my reading intervention kiddos are able to read short vowel sounds, I decided it was time to step it up...Here's a long vowel version! It's a pretty simple game to play whole group (and even better for my reading intervention kids). Simply give each child a card and tell them not to let anyone see the backside of the card (the picture). They will find a buddy and have them try to read the word. Check the answer on the back of the card. Then it's the other person's turn to share their word. Once each person has "quizzed" their buddy, they switch cards and move around the room to find a new buddy. </div>

Happy New Year, Friends! Many of you are probably heading back to school, or if you are like me, sitting at home snowed-in...but regardless of what you're doing now, I thought I'd share some plans for the future!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Steve & I have made some resolutions this year to help more kids learn to read! Because of the huge response we've received from <b><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sight-word-flip-it/id675328955?mt=8" target="_blank">Sight Word Flip-It</a> </b>in 2013, we've decided to make it our goal to get our app in front of 100,000 kids in 2014. We've dropped the price of the app to just $0.99! If you haven't already...head over to <b><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sight-word-flip-it/id675328955?mt=8" target="_blank">iTunes</a></b> to grab a copy.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px; text-align: left;">This app works and stands alone because of the way it is organized and designed. Word lists have been carefully chosen and organized by vowel sound allowing kids to practice difficult spelling patterns for all 16 vowel sounds in a controlled and systematic way. Our graphics are kid friendly but not overly distracting and simple enough for their little fingers to use. Don't believe us? Take a look at Steve's four-year old using it!</span></span></div>

Now that I'm working with K-4 students I've been challenged by ways to pass along what we're working on each month without having to create something for each grade level....Luckily, I started a "Metacognition News" a few years ago when I was in the classroom. It's based upon my most favorite book, "Comprehension Connections," by Tanny McGregor. (If you haven't read it yet...You probably should!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Today I sat down to make it usable for any grade. I've posted it on my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Metacognition-Comprehension-Newsletter-for-Parents-857928" style="font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">TpT Store</a>. Feel free to head on over to snag the FREE download. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If there is any reading materials that you pass along to families, I'd love to see it!</div>

So, a while back I attended an OG two-week training. I learned a lot of helpful tips and tricks that I'm excited to use in the small-group setting this school year. And one of the tips, well...wasn't really a tip for anyone but myself. I never realized that the letter "c" makes the sound /s/ when it's followed by the letters i, e, and y. The lightbulb went off...Just a few years later than it should've! </div>

I've been back in my room the past couple days and decided to revamp some of my decor...A while back I used these vocabulary posters:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyo9r2y_RNqK3isCsaaoZuKtGwP0V7DXvLj1lb9kHUTBNqiWdkpDt__tzHVKx1qvGn4cwNrAh9L1ixgMdLHme377AUcBV_K3-OfFiKdoNPCdDFZX2O2HQ8_-FSlvM3PulgAyjcgQYzCNqS/s1600/vocabularywall.jpg.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyo9r2y_RNqK3isCsaaoZuKtGwP0V7DXvLj1lb9kHUTBNqiWdkpDt__tzHVKx1qvGn4cwNrAh9L1ixgMdLHme377AUcBV_K3-OfFiKdoNPCdDFZX2O2HQ8_-FSlvM3PulgAyjcgQYzCNqS/s400/vocabularywall.jpg.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Although I have lots of wall space in my current room...it's already been taken up by other various reading posters! I wanted a smaller version that I could have easy access to at the reading table. So here's what I came up with...well, at least a sample. You can download a poster for synonyms, antonyms, homophones, compounds, and contractions at our <b><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Vocabulary-Posters-789459" target="_blank">TpT Store</a></b>. Did I mention they are FREE?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I finally got my new <b><a href="http://www.readingresource.net/readingactivities-II.html" target="_blank">"Syllable Types Posters"</a></b> up on ReadingResource.net...Just scroll all the way to find them! I purchased cheap frames at Ikea for them and plan to hang them in my room as soon as I can get back in to school. (I'll update this post with pics of them!) </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm also working on some activities to go with them, which I will also be posting soon!</div>

Last week I was looking to purchase a "blending cards" and was disappointed to find that to purchase a new one, it'd be roughly $40-50 (just for one set).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
$40-50 times 5 kids at my reading table = NOT GUNNA HAPPEN!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Luckily, I came across an awesome blog that had them for free! (Not only did they have the cards I was looking for, but there are a TON of really good resources for teaching phonemic awareness). Needless to say, I ran through some colored ink and card stock pretty fast. Anyways, head on over to <b><a href="http://blog.maketaketeach.com/using-blending-boards-during-small-group-instruction/" target="_blank">Make, Take, Teach</a> </b>to snag the downloads for these cards. I did print my cards like a traffic light...the first sounds on green card stock, the vowel sounds on yellow, and the last sound on pink/red. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now, I also was looking to purchase a "blending board" and was frustrated to find they too were pretty expensive. You can click on the following links if you want to spend between $35-50 <a href="http://orton-gillingham.com/frmShoppingCatalog.aspx?intCategoryID=1&intProductID=16" target="_blank">IMSE</a> and <a href="http://rlac.com/store/product46.html" target="_blank">RLAC</a>. That too was not gunna happen! <b><a href="http://blog.maketaketeach.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Blending-Board-Directions.gif" target="_blank">Make, Take, Teach</a> </b>has directions on how to make your own...but that was too much work for me!<br />
<br />
I located a magnetic board that I purchased from JoAnn Fabrics a while back...(Sorry for the horrible pics!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUaDCax8wjNtrsCcYFzVDQn3ow3HVRW8MHubuPIZ2-wV7fS9OTrkj32vCI1vNLl58DkdmMajTer9bLOw-PN3bf7JgZCWO76a-4DAZdmrhw1ZccP8BiujCkjTogKVEItkxXbSz1g4r34B_W/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUaDCax8wjNtrsCcYFzVDQn3ow3HVRW8MHubuPIZ2-wV7fS9OTrkj32vCI1vNLl58DkdmMajTer9bLOw-PN3bf7JgZCWO76a-4DAZdmrhw1ZccP8BiujCkjTogKVEItkxXbSz1g4r34B_W/s1600/photo.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I went to Staples and purchased three plastic business card holders ($1.99 each) and six magnets ($2.99).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijjHvh0QOSuXWi3lo_gyDfUmxzI75je_YqjPVNhWMIOUNpGNUWFBshpxUNZwZogYHF4F3ZsQntvta1a6UYn2314CYRD7amnKoB6P2ki5W8jFG4g5fTS6cyCpgEpDk8zBEwhQ1biZcqUhgw/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijjHvh0QOSuXWi3lo_gyDfUmxzI75je_YqjPVNhWMIOUNpGNUWFBshpxUNZwZogYHF4F3ZsQntvta1a6UYn2314CYRD7amnKoB6P2ki5W8jFG4g5fTS6cyCpgEpDk8zBEwhQ1biZcqUhgw/s1600/photo.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I took some Gorilla Glue and glued the magnets to the back of the business card holders. I glued two magnets on each holder and let them dry for a few minutes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhclH8J3twAsKGIreUAHad-zRrkyl03BdSwoeakzLKTknkZvYhYHamBvgOMAtoYZIfQE33qJI2UH2mi-JvBwzLnb1jolyojbaMV1UDZuQw3MrfZq_Q3mpOR93P3zzNPymdyNFcBzFLGtPfo/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhclH8J3twAsKGIreUAHad-zRrkyl03BdSwoeakzLKTknkZvYhYHamBvgOMAtoYZIfQE33qJI2UH2mi-JvBwzLnb1jolyojbaMV1UDZuQw3MrfZq_Q3mpOR93P3zzNPymdyNFcBzFLGtPfo/s1600/photo.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When the magnets were in place, I was able to put them on the board...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQjbycg0lOlO0dMSe-5mHnjtitpvTds_z64MAdRTtBT2W6hRujfIQZ48BGFVMjkJ6m1srwqVwAuLLi8ngCWbZHZQ-NnodZbRwMylSXWDNZ_WDAe1WhyphenhyphenLDz-7XthQxjAMS20cqpUIhMEXNi/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQjbycg0lOlO0dMSe-5mHnjtitpvTds_z64MAdRTtBT2W6hRujfIQZ48BGFVMjkJ6m1srwqVwAuLLi8ngCWbZHZQ-NnodZbRwMylSXWDNZ_WDAe1WhyphenhyphenLDz-7XthQxjAMS20cqpUIhMEXNi/s1600/photo.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Another cool thing about this board is that there are holes at the top...If I decide to punch holes in the top of the cards I can also flip them over the board!<br />
<br />
I'm sure you've worked with kids who've had difficulty blending at least three phonemes. No matter how much I stretch each sound, /c/ /a/ /t/ sometimes it comes out like 'at' or 'tack'. Here's a <b><a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3oSQOjnoBNWZ2Z6MDJvNGNiWm8/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">little freebie</a></b> to help those kiddos...a little something I learned this past week when I was taking a reading class. (It's not as big as it looks in the pic below).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX0M9favhgOLklQwA2qyd5sVc-piYKOcB3iDMFu9W5Wn1AyMcxYBJuFsb4Vt3Gfx6ncpvEc1YLGH02ZSiGDJN2YdVKDP9wcpuutrmFJjaWKQGvcw50SiIbJxvX6yxEFGYkAd5by2U0DZwF/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX0M9favhgOLklQwA2qyd5sVc-piYKOcB3iDMFu9W5Wn1AyMcxYBJuFsb4Vt3Gfx6ncpvEc1YLGH02ZSiGDJN2YdVKDP9wcpuutrmFJjaWKQGvcw50SiIbJxvX6yxEFGYkAd5by2U0DZwF/s1600/photo.JPG" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
So let's say the word is "rag". Place the card in front of the child:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
(1) Have them look at the first row. Every time they say a sound, have them tap their finger on a dot. Don't have them try to put the sounds back together! <span style="color: #45818e;"><b>(/r/ /a/ /g/)</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #45818e;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(2) Have them look at the second row. They are only going to say the first two sounds as they tap their finger on the dots. <b style="color: #45818e;">(/r/ /a/)</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b style="color: #45818e;"><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(3) Have them look at the third row. They are only going to blend the first two sounds as they drag their finger on the line. <b style="color: #45818e;">(/ra/)</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b style="color: #45818e;"><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(4) Have them look at the fourth row. They are going to blend the first two sounds as they drag their finger on the line and then tap the dot as they say the last sound. <b style="color: #45818e;">(/ra/ /g/)</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b style="color: #45818e;"><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(5) Have them blend the first two sounds (/ra/) and the last sound /g/ as they drag their finger on the line.</div>
<br />
And there you have it! I think once the kids have this concept down, it would be helpful for them to look at the cards that are on the blending board as they tap out the sounds...Eventually, they could just tap on the table!<br />
<br /></div>

I'm joining <b><a href="http://www.ladybugsteacherfiles.com/2013/05/optimum-organization-linky-party.html" target="_blank">Ladybug's Teacher Files</a></b> Organizational Linky Party this summer...It's been a while since I've joined one, but her's are usually the best! (I heart her labels).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-b8yI3N9RKvCD3vberXl_K7gC8VBKVk9snr1o7St0WxxSoaTthsctuDX90dTom086FAe4Cji-4UOp3U63jhxqp7v_DxQY-Ctl8M14y_h6lX2BB-hh-Q4wtRBV796cGIX077nrosftQIEm/s1600/optimum+organization.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-b8yI3N9RKvCD3vberXl_K7gC8VBKVk9snr1o7St0WxxSoaTthsctuDX90dTom086FAe4Cji-4UOp3U63jhxqp7v_DxQY-Ctl8M14y_h6lX2BB-hh-Q4wtRBV796cGIX077nrosftQIEm/s1600/optimum+organization.png" height="163" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I wish I had some monumental organizational pics to share with you, but I've packed up my classroom for the year and there's not too much to share with you. I was able to snap a few today that might be of interest...but I do promise that I will have some new book labels coming at you this summer, as my mom just retired and left me with more books than one person could ever need. Translation: I've been hitting up every Target store in the Columbus area to stock up on new bins and shelving!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Quite possibly one of the greatest purchases ever...So good, I now have two of them! I bought this one a while back at Sam's Club and have used it as an art cart, math cart...and now, as exciting as this may be...a DIBELS cart! I have a labeled bin for every teacher in the building so when I progress monitor/benchmark I can just take the bin with me...Or I can wheel the entire cart!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVKTBYas7VqnD3sadx2V72uLHsMw5zdgc6o8Al1C5Q9Rdn3F0D4EQUVUakp4uFfkNBWhEnXzxCRvFDypy4YAlnR-j1YXsCbo7CN4WN2IWLLUrfwcxkOr-sCE5S9HP1jnuWouVivF2cO4-q/s1600/photo+copy+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVKTBYas7VqnD3sadx2V72uLHsMw5zdgc6o8Al1C5Q9Rdn3F0D4EQUVUakp4uFfkNBWhEnXzxCRvFDypy4YAlnR-j1YXsCbo7CN4WN2IWLLUrfwcxkOr-sCE5S9HP1jnuWouVivF2cO4-q/s1600/photo+copy+3.JPG" height="640" width="476" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm also pretty excited about my new shelf that I just scored from my mom. It fits all of my boxes that I use to keep materials for each vowel sound. I know the labels aren't too jazzy right now, but that's on the list as a summer project. I purchased the colored bins at Costco (five for $18.99) and I heart them. As for the bins on the bottom shelf, I am going to use those to keep all of my important RTI docs...They too, need jazzy labels.</div>

A few weeks ago my teaching colleague had a great idea to create an "Amazing Race" for our reading intervention students. She's an avid watcher of the TV show and helped me get some ideas to make this come to life! We decided to pick five big ideas we've worked on this year with our second graders, which includes, determining author's purpose, reading fluency, characteristics of non-fiction, retelling, and parts of speech. Since we are at a STEM school, we decided to throw in some engineering and math tasks too! We started small this year to see how it goes, but would love to make it a school-wide end-of-the-year activity. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's the <b><a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3oSQOjnoBNWeWhxSVUtaGhRQU0/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">pdf</a></b>, but if you'd like to tweak it for your kiddos, I'd be more than happy to send you the editable "Pages" (for Mac) template. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKf-iNIau200DXEGDvIKYAYkpB6fjzUnw775e34mjahzEcHOeFjOd9KFJsZ5dHhuB2aKt3igUWj0le8_jVDeQQlg6bQtRdw45DF3K6btPoHatQxgBXiQElQAp330WMiOoAWQ9OVhQTK0cF/s1600/AmazingRaceLiteracyStyle+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKf-iNIau200DXEGDvIKYAYkpB6fjzUnw775e34mjahzEcHOeFjOd9KFJsZ5dHhuB2aKt3igUWj0le8_jVDeQQlg6bQtRdw45DF3K6btPoHatQxgBXiQElQAp330WMiOoAWQ9OVhQTK0cF/s640/AmazingRaceLiteracyStyle+copy.jpg" width="489" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I tried to color-coordinate each reading task so that it was easy to prepare. Instead of using yellow envelopes for clues, I used manila folders. I placed the directions on the outside and the materials needed in the inside (and laminated). Since there are roughly six to seven kids in each reading group I created four of everything (figuring that they'd be working with a buddy). Here's a picture of what it looks like when it's put together:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuTs0F9n9RBqJzt_CXHgaa1f9WFuJJiaPn3iquv3CMo3CR6bK9xavpjxcIVeJvit87MhCv1eVthf0BL9Zho3_Q5VGEBL4uXF4iBBI9OzSlvDCmvBZFhgexBBtryzJexFdAOYU73__a3KXB/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="297" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuTs0F9n9RBqJzt_CXHgaa1f9WFuJJiaPn3iquv3CMo3CR6bK9xavpjxcIVeJvit87MhCv1eVthf0BL9Zho3_Q5VGEBL4uXF4iBBI9OzSlvDCmvBZFhgexBBtryzJexFdAOYU73__a3KXB/s400/photo.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So when I started working on this, I had to bribe some of my colleagues to participate...I only needed five "stations" or "legs" so it wasn't too hard to get the help. Although it's pretty lengthy, here's what we came up with... </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>AUTHOR'S PURPOSE</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Students started out in the Reading Intervention Room where they read a selection to determine the author's purpose. (For this, I found a persuasive letter that I retyped). Depending upon their answer, they had a clue to tell them where to go next. (These clues are located in the "Tracking Sheet"). The next clue was located in the gymnasium which told them to find a 1st Grade teacher with an odd classroom number.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<b>TIMED FLUENCY READ</b></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Once they located the correct teacher, they received a reading passage and a timer. One student had to be the reader and one was the timer. Their goal was to increase the number of words per minute for three trials. If students were able to do this correctly, they were given a simple engineering task. If they weren't able to do this correctly, they were given a more complex engineering task. Upon completion, that teacher would provide them with the next clue!</div>

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>CHARACTERISTICS OF NON-FICTION</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Students were given a non-fiction story (pulled from Reading A-Z) to read and be able to list four characteristics of non-fiction. Depending upon how many they were able to get correctly determined how many rulers they were given for the next task. Students had to measure the length of the hallway...so the more rulers, the better! Once students successfully completed the hallway measurement task, they were given a clue to find a teacher with only one short vowel sound in her name.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>RETELLING A STORY</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Students worked together to read a story (also pulled from Reading A-Z). Students had to identify the beginning, middle, and end...while making sure they also addressed the characters, setting, and plot. Students received 1-3 clues for their next task based upon how well they were able to retell the story. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>NOUNS, VERBS, AND ADJECTIVES</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Students read a passage and had to sort the nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Once the teacher ok'd their work...They were finished!</div>

It's been quite a task getting this up and going...I've been working on bits and pieces since spring break. {Nothing like waiting until the end of the year to get it posted. Better late than never, I guess}. I've been compiling my favorite phonological awareness activities over the past year, some of which are new and some Steve and I already have on our <a href="http://www.readingresource.net/phonemicawarenessactivities.html" target="_blank"><b>website</b></a>. (I tried to jazz them up a bit though).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
Here are some sample pics of what's in our new 58-page <b><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Phonological-Awareness-Activities-K-1-Common-Core-702677" target="_blank">Phonological Awareness Activities Download</a></b>. </div>

This is my favorite part about our new download! You'll get a 30-page phonological awareness progression for ways to help your students at the word, syllable, and sound level. Simply cut the page down the middle, punch a whole in the corner, and bind with a metal ring! It's perfect to do with your students when you a few free minutes...and it's super handy. (Scroll down to see another pic!)<br />
